Gewürztraminer Vigna 'Kastelaz' 2020<br /><br />The Vigna 'Kastelaz' is a unique steep slope directly above the wine village of Tramin and is one of the exclusive southern vineyards of South Tyrol. A 'Vigna' is an<br />additional designation of origin; the term stands for a precisely delineated and mapped vineyard. Due to its extreme slope of up to 63 degrees, the Vigna 'Kastelaz' is<br />elaborately laid out in narrow terraces. Moreover, it is entirely south-facing - a rarity in South Tyrol. Kastelaz is a side fan of postglacial origin and consists of a layered<br />structure of loose limestone soils interspersed with sand and hard rock such as granite and porphyry. The microclimatic conditions of the Vigna 'Kastelaz' are also rich in<br />contrasts: during the day the vines can benefit from the warm, extremely sunny southern exposure, while from late afternoon a strong wind and later the fresh evening<br />mountain air provide cool temperatures. Here, between 330 and 380 metres above sea level and with extremely low vine yields, some of Elena Walch's absolute top wines<br />are produced.<br /><br />'The Gewürztraminer Vigna 'Kastelaz' has long been one of the most famous Gewürztraminers on the international scene. It presents itself with a rich, golden yellow colour<br />and a beguilingly complex bouquet: elegant and mineral, with aromas of roses and lychee as well as some acacia honey in the background. The wine is also convincing and<br />complex on the palate: with an elegant structure, stimulating acidity, harmonious, spicy freshness and a delicate, juicy finish. A wine with a lot of finesse and character!'<br /><br />LESE 2020<br />Spring 2020, with its beautiful weather and warm temperatures, spring flowers in the garden and thick blanket of fresh snow on the mountains, led to the relatively early<br />development of the vines, which settled down again with the cooler temperatures in June. After a warm midsummer, the harvest started in the first days of September. The<br />autumn was characterised by warm days and cool nights, but also by some freak weather, whereby the careful cultivation of the vineyards in early summer was noticeable.<br />The 2020 vintage resulted in wines of great South Tyrolean typicity: The young white wines stand out with fresh liveliness and clear aromatic expression, the red wines show<br />very good structure and straight, fine fruit.<br />VINIFICATION Before pressing, the grapes are left to macerate for about 6 hours. Gentle pressing and static pre-clarification of the must by cooling. Its rarity lies in the unique combination of grapes<br />from the classic terroir of Las Compuertas, in Luján de Cuyo, with the more recently discovered terroirs in the Valle de Uco: Gualtallary, Los Chacayes, Paraje Altamira and<br />Eugenio Bustos, all between 1,070 and 1,200 metres above sea level. Growing region<br />The best grapes of this variety come from the growing areas of Girlan, Montiggl and Eppan Berg at 500 m above sea level. The different combinations of the growing soils -<br />clay, lime and gravel - give the wine a unique character.<br /><br />Vinification and ageing<br />The grapes are harvested by hand and delivered in small containers. After a short maceration and gentle whole bunch pressing, the must is clarified from the lees by natural<br />sedimentation. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks. The wine is matured for 8 months<br />in stainless steel tanks and large wooden barrels without biological acid degradation on the fine lees.<br /><br />Wine portrait<br />The Sauvignon variety has been cultivated in South Tyrol for more than a century. for more than a century. A great wine of international standard with an expressive body, which can develop its great potential even better after another 2<br />years of bottle ageing.<br /><br />Pinot Noir was first successfully cultivated in South Tyrol at the beginning of the 19th century. URBANO PINOT NOIR<br /><br />A Pinot Noir whose dark ruby-red colour already hints at its enormous concentration.<br />If the nose is still somewhat closed at first, it soon releases its aromas in the glass, which are reminiscent of the multi-faceted bouquet of classic Burgundies.<br />The enveloping scent of sour cherries and raspberries is underlined by delicate vanilla tones and fine spicy notes.<br />On the palate, it is very well balanced and convinces with its elegant acidity, well-integrated tannins and an impressively aromatic concentration.<br /><br />The Barthenau Vigna S. Urbano is an expression of our most valuable Cru site. During fermentation, the must is kept in constant contact with the solid grape components.<br />Maturation<br /><br />The ageing in wooden barrels takes place in two different phases: in the first phase, the wine is aged for about 12 months in small oak barrels; in the second phase, after the<br />assemblage, it is aged for about another 8 months in large oak barrels. Description<br /><br />Very deep violet/black colour. Highly dense bouquet, chassis, blackberries. Very powerful yet elegant attack, densely concentrated tannins on the palate, powerful<br />backbone and enormously long finish.<br /><br />High ageing potential: 10-15 years.<br /><br />Recommended food: Goes well with strong dishes with red meat, grilled or roasted, but especially with game and with spicy cheeses.<br />Serving temperature: 16° C.<br />Grape variety: Cabernet Sauvignon.<br />Sites: The vineyard site is located at an altitude of 430 m above sea level with optimal sun exposure. A rather dry site, with sandy, gravelly moraine soil.<br />Vinification: Maceration for 10 days with gentle circulation of the marc followed by maceration for a further 10-14 days. Racking of the young wine into new/used barriques,<br />malolactic fermentation, several transfers of the wine during the 18 months of ageing. Dedicated to the legendary temple of the Opera, to which the winery feels close and inspired, it is the best expression of the vintage and the Bellavista style. The grapes<br />that make up this great cuvée, mainly chardonnay and pinot noir, are the best possible, the result of a radical selection of individual vineyards. In addition to the exceptional<br />quality of the raw materials used, this Franciacorta differs from other Bruts in that more than a quarter of the wines from which it is made are aged for seven months in small<br />oak barrels. Statuesque in its balance, capable of supporting and at the same time riding the characteristics of the vintage, this Metodo Franciacorta is impressive for its<br />intensity and complexity. The colour is an intense straw-yellow, with a very fine and persistent perlage, a prologue to aromas that appear quintessentially Bellavista.<br />Generous and elegant are the floral notes of hawthorn, unpredictable the balsamic ones of laurel, first, then candied citrus and small pastries.
